Suggestions
We recommend the organization Atmosfair:
https://www.atmosfair.de/de/kompensieren/wunschmenge/
1. Change your default search engine to ecosia - an eco-friendly search engine that uses its profits to plant trees.
2. Choose suppliers that are willing to produce in a sustainable way - supporting other green and sustainable businesses can have a big impact.
3. Incorporating these suggestions that reduce energy use and waste, not only helps the environment but also saves your business money

Potential reduction of CO2 by switching to renewable energy

Reduction of kilograms of CO2 per month
Percentage of energy saved by switching to ENERGY STAR® appliances

Suggestions
1. Switch to energy providers which use renewable energy to reduce emissions - and even better, think of installing solar panels on your roof, the money you save on your energy bill usually pays for the installation within 10 years.
2. Install insulations to reduce energy loss through heating
3. Use energy efficient appliances and install motion detectors for lights.
4. When appliances are plugged in, they still absorb power, even when they are turned off. This can be controlled by the use of a smart plug which can help you save an average of 114 kilowatts per year.
5. Reallocation of furniture can help heat flow better and can help save energy. If you have sofa or chairs in front of the radiators, moving them away can help the free flow of heat.
6. Use thermostats in your office to maintain the appropriate temperature. Each degree saved in heating can save 6% of energy usage
7. Use automatic shutdown on computers to save energy after office hours.

Technical improvements

This graph shows the potential water savings (in liters) with various technical changes
Water savings per month

Suggestions
1. Install faucet-restrictors (they cost around 5€ per sink) in order to reduce water flow up to 50%.
2. Instal low-flow toilets: the costs range between 40€ (outside water tank) and 550€ (water tank inside the wall, costs include installation).
3. Placing reminder stickers next to the sink and dishwasher can influence employee behavior and reduce water consumption considerably.
4. In Germany, pollution of fresh water is a serious environmental problem. Using biodegradable soaps and reducing chemical usage where possible can make a substantial impact.

Suggestions
1. Use double sided printing and don’t print e-mails unnecessarily to help reduce your paper waste. Using recycled paper is a great way to reduce your impact as well!
2. Provide cups next to the sinks for your employees and stop providing them with bottled water in order to decrease the plastic waste from bottles.
3.Batteries have a high environmental impact when placed in normal waste due to chemical leaching– make sure to collect and dispose of batteries separately.
4. The majority of GHG emissions that come from electronics are from the manufacturing of these products – the longer you keep them, the lower the impact on the environment. Think about fixing broken products, before replacing them with new ones!
5. Choose local and regional items to reduce transportation impacts.
1. Reduce
2. Re-use
3. Recycle
Waste awareness: For environmental impact, it is important to first try to reduce your waste where possible, then re-use materials where you can, and lastly separate and recycle what waste remains.

Transportation emissions

Carbon impact

Potential emission savings per year

*This calculation is based on a 50% reduction of automobile usage. This also assumes that the 50% switched to alternative modes of transportation, and is distributed equally across the other modes.
Suggestions
1. It is easy to promote sustainable commuting modes for your employees, possible suggestions include:
  a. Having showers and bike parking at work to make it easy and convenient for people to bike to work.
  b. Offer your employees a Bahncard 100 instead of a company car.
  c. Have department competitions for the most sustainable transportation mod
2. Many employees commute from the same area of the city – sharing rides is an easy way to cut down on daily transportation emissions.
3. Signing up employees for car sharing is also a great way to reduce emissions – employees then have access to a car when they need it, and can use other more sustainable means of transportation when they don’t. Signing up with car sharing as a business and combining this with ride sharing encourages your employees to share and reduce driving, and use other sustainable modes of transport.
4. Reduce flight emissions by switching to online & skype meetings where possible, and booking trains for smaller distances, to make sure you only fly when it is absolutely necessary.
